THINKING ABOUT ANIMALS CONFERENCE 2011
The Department of Sociology at Brock University announces a conference on “Thinking About Animals” to be held March 31 and April 1, 2011 at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.
This two-day conference will explore a variety of issues concerning the current and historical situation of nonhuman animals and interactions with humans.
The Department is organizing this conference with the assistance of the Office of the Dean of Social Sciences, the Departments of English, Political Science, History and Visual Arts, the MA Program in Critical Sociology, and the MA Program in Social Justice and Equity Studies. We are also grateful for the generous support provided to the conference from Niagara Action for Animals (see NAfA link).
We are especially pleased to be hosting this conference in association with the Institute of Critical Animal Studies as the 10th Annual North American ICAS conference (see ICAS link).
As with past conferences, we welcome participation from both activists and academics. The conference will be completely vegan. The Call for Papers is now closed.

NIAGARA ACTION FOR ANIMALS
Niagara Action for Animals (NAfA) is a grass-roots, all-volunteer charity that has been operating since 1989 to protect animals in the local area. NAfA has been instrumental in the development of Critical Animal Studies at Brock University and has consistently supported our conferences and events.
Locally, NAfA is involved in demonstrations and protests against the exploitation of nonhuman animals, organizes public education campaigns to raise awareness, operates a spay and neuter campaign and works to create a more compassionate society through its monthly vegan potluck dinners. We are proud to collaborate with NAfA.

CRITICAL THEORY AND ANIMAL LIBERATION BOOK LAUNCH
Brock University’s “Thinking About Animals” conference is pleased to be host the Canadian booklaunch of Dr. John Sanbonmatsu’s new book Critical Theory and Animal Liberation. This edited volume contains essays by a number of prominent scholars in the field of Critical Animal Studies. This book places “animal rights” in the context of social justice and argues that the use, treatment and fate of other animals are important political questions. We are pleased to welcome John Sanbonmatsu and several of the contributors to the book at this conference and to provide opportunities for discussion of the important issues raised in this volume.
