Within Westernized societies, particularly the United States, there has been a near-universal acceptance that nonviolent action has been the foundation on which the progress and/or success of political and social justice movements have been built. Yet, contrary to popular belief, political violence has played a crucial role in advancing historic justice struggles. This breakthrough study examines the historic roles that both nonviolence and political violence have played in international social and political movements. The profound and well-researched conclusions presented advocate the necessity of political and social revolution in the United States—using any means necessary. This is an excellent resource for those contemplating political and social change and for anyone involved in political and social movements, especially those wondering why single-issue pursuits rarely, if ever, are successful. Challenging the predominant societal norms on the political and social change process in the United States, this is an important contribution to the struggle that may very well become the new American revolution.

Kuykendall argues that the racial problem is a political class conflict and must be resolved through revolutionary political class struggle. He adeptly unravels the complex interrelationships of status, political repression, and social stratification involved in American race issues. As the social crisis of race relations threaten to boil over in 21st century America, the content of this book is critical. Looking at the roots of the “race problem” as a power dynamic, what solutions – if any – seem possible? Can this crisis be resolved?

Over this time, this regime has waged a continuous genocidal campaign against Native American nations, an oppressive and murderous campaign against African Americans, against Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Puerto Ricans, women and the poor. The natural environment has been decimated by industries and governmental agencies that prioritize monetary gain over the protection of the Earth. Our air is becoming too polluted to breathe, water too contaminated to drink, and our food supply compromised by chemical herbicides, pesticides and genetic engineering. Millions of animals are used, abused, and slaughtered in the United States annually not out of any necessity, but for purposes of human vanity, fraudulent medical experimentation and product testing, unhealthy dietary consumption, and sadistic entertainment. This is in addition to the millions of people the U.S. government and corporations have killed and displaced internationally as a direct result of U.S. foreign policy interests and imperialism. This Country Must Change is an effort to further the discussion of the necessity of a fundamental political and social revolution in the United States. This book contains essays by twelve activists and authors, all who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to revolutionary change. It is as inspiring as it is educational and a must read for anyone involved with or considering advocating for political or social change within the U.S. Arguing that reformist measures cannot be relied upon to correct the fundamental problems caused by the corporate elite and political structure in the United States, the contributing authors in this book are unified in their call for a significant revolutionary change in the United States of America.

Once imprisoned, Melville became a key organizer and a crucial element of the notorious Attica Prison rebellion, uniting prisoners across racial barriers and making the ultimate sacrifice for revolutionary change. Mad Bomber Melville traces Sam Melville s short life and rapid political development, highlighting a much-needed example of an undying and uncompromising struggle for justice and liberation.

Leslie James Pickering quit high school at seventeen to struggle against this system that stops at nothing to profit from the destruction of everything. After five years of continuous civil disobedience and protest, he grew frustrated with the lack of results in his activity and helped to found the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office (NAELFPO) in early 2000. He served as press officer with the NAELFPO until his final resignation in summer of 2002. During this period, the NAELFPO sustained two raids by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), responded to half a dozen grand jury subpoenas; conducted pubic presentations; produced booklets, newspapers, magazines, and a video on the ELF and handled the release of dozens of ELF communiqués. Through the NAELFPO, Pickering was the editor of Resistance, the Journal of the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office, as well as many other independently-produced materials regarding the Earth Liberation Front. Pickering served twice as ELF Spokesperson, handling countless local, national, international, corporate and independent media inquires, which resulted in coverage in the New York Times, the Washington Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Christian Science Monitor, Rolling Stone magazine and many more. He has also appeared in televised interviews with the ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, CBC and BBC networks, as well as National Geographic TV and many others. He has given lectures at various conferences and at Lewis & Clark College, Saint Michael s University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Bard College, Yale University, New York University and many other institutions of learning. In 2003, Pickering resigned from the NAELFPO, issuing a lengthy statement renouncing nonviolence philosophy and single issue-politics, but he continues to support the ELF as a component of a revolutionary movement.
