Review Process and Format Suggestions

The Journal for Critical Animal Studies is a peer-reviewed journal. We seek work of the highest quality that is committed to exploring the philosophical, ethical, political, and legal aspects of animal liberation. Journal issues will include a wide variety of scholarly work, including essays, critical comments, book reviews, calls to action, and interviews.

We ask that essays and reviews be between 2000-6000 words, have limited endnotes, and follow style guidelines set out in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Helpful details about MLA format can also be found online at:

Kingwood College Library Online

Purdue University's Owl Online Writing Lab

In addition, we ask that you follow these style guidelines in order to make conversions to multiple formats smooth:

  • All essays should be sent in Word format
  • Titles should be centered. By lines underneath title, centered as well. No cover sheet.
  • Single spaced body, 12pt. Paragraphs should be separated with a space rather than indents.
  • Section titles should be bold. Subtitles within sections should be italic.
  • The use of indents, bullets, bold and italics for emphasis/data presentation within the body should be kept to a minimum where possible.

All submissions will be read by at least two members of the journal’s editorial board and given a judgment regarding publication. Essays will be assigned one of the three following categories:

1. accept without revisions
2. accept with revisions
3. reject

All articles submitted will be read and returned to the author within three-to-four weeks of the submission date. Authors will have three weeks to make revisions in accordance with reader requests. Contributors whose submissions are accepted for publication will be asked to provide a brief biography that describes their institutional or activist affiliation and personal/research interests. Copyright of all published articles will remain with the author, but we prefer essays that have not been previously published.
